Thickness and joint layout are chosen to match the use. Foundation Flatwork

Foundation flatwork covers the horizontal concrete that carries a building: footings, stem walls turned flat, and slab on grade for shops, additions, garages and accessory structures. This is the part of the job where tolerance matters most, because everything above it inherits the plane we leave behind. We build to the dimensions on the drawings, hold square corners with strings and diagonals, and keep the top of the concrete true so framing starts level.

We handle the base the same way every time: proof roll, compact, re-compact, then set a vapor barrier and steel where the design calls for it. Rebar and mesh are chaired up so they sit in the middle of the slab instead of on the ground. When the truck arrives we place in lifts, consolidate with a vibrator on thick sections, and strike the surface off on rails so the plane stays flat across the whole pour.

Structural concrete gets test cylinders cast from the same mix, capped with the placement date and broken at seven and twenty-eight days. Stamped and Colored Concrete

Stamped and colored concrete turns a plain slab into a finished surface that reads like stone, slate, brick or tile without the maintenance of a real masonry floor. We build the base and forms exactly as we do for any structural slab, because the decorative layer sits on the same concrete that has to perform. The difference is in the placement, the color and the timing of the stamping.

We use integral color for a through-and-through tone and release agent to keep the mats from sticking. Stamp patterns are laid out so the joints and grout lines run true to the house, not to the truck. Garage and shop pads are the workhorses of flatwork. They take vehicles, floor jacks, tool chests and, in a working shop, the point load of a lift. A pad that is too thin, under-based or pour-finished with a soft trowel will dust, spall and crack under that load within a few seasons. We build pads to carry weight from the first lift of base to the last pass of the trowel.

We size the pour to the intended use, place steel on chairs and keep the slab thickness consistent across the whole footprint, because thick edges and thin middles are where slabs fail. The apron is graded to shed water and the interior plane is kept flat so a vehicle does not rock. For shops we set anchor locations and embeds before the pour, so equipment goes down on a finished floor instead of a cut-up one.

Curb and Sidewalk Work

Curb and sidewalk work is flatwork that belongs to the public realm, and it shows every flaw. Repair and Resurfacing

Repair and resurfacing give sound but worn concrete another life. Not every failing slab needs to come out. Where the concrete is still structurally sound but the surface is spalled, scaled, cracked or stained, we can repair the cause and address the surface so the slab serves for years more. Where a section has truly failed, we cut it out square, prepare the subgrade and pour a matching patch that ties into the surrounding work.

Good repair starts with diagnosis. A crack that keeps opening is a base or drainage problem, not a patching problem, so we fix the water before we fix the surface. Spalled driveways get cleaned, bonded and topped with a resurfacing mix chosen to match the existing color.
